About Yala National Park

Yala is a vast wildlife area in the south-east of Sri Lanka, made up of light forest, scrub, grassland, tanks and lagoons. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and a national park in 1938.

It is famous for its leopards, but also shelters elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, peacocks and many other birds and animals. You need to be at the entrance early in the morning to have the best chance of seeing the animals.
